Fundamental Concepts about Intellectual Property In-Person
This is a presentation by KAUST Associate General Counsel, Senior IP Attorney Mardson Q. McQuay, Ph.D, J.D. In this workshop, he will be presenting about the following:
Intellectual Property (IP) Rights are one of the principal economic assets and their management and protection have become the cornerstones of corporate strategy because ideas and innovation have become the principal drivers of economic growth and wealth creation in today’s Knowledge Economy. Furthermore, IP protection is essential to fostering innovation and creativity. At a university setting, a lack of exploration of IP rights, substantially limits the amounts of funds available for artists and researchers to engage in creative activities and research and development, while, at the same time, reducing the visibility of their institution to their peers. Without protection of ideas, businesses would not reap the full benefits of their inventions and would focus less on research and development. Similarly, artists would not be fully compensated for their creations and cultural vitality would suffer as a result. This presentation will discuss applied principles for non-lawyers about the development of Strong Patents for the protection of IP in a university setting.
